Our Che: The Transformation of Guerrillero Heroico in Türkiye

As part of the exhibition "Che Through Korda’s Lens: The Story of a Portrait That Began with Revolution and Became an Icon," a conference was held featuring Fahri Aral, Yılmaz Aysan, and Bülent Somay, where the political, sociological, and visual transformation of Alberto Korda Díaz’s iconic 1960 photograph Guerrillero Heroico was discussed in the context of its reception in Türkiye.

Fahri Aral, a participant in the 1968 movement and director of İstanbul Bilgi University Press; Yılmaz Aysan, whose recent research book Posters of ’68: The Story of the METU Revolutionary Poster Workshop was recently published; and Bülent Somay, a lecturer at İstanbul Bilgi University, spoke about the image's evolution since the 1960s, Che’s influence on the ’68 generation, and how his ideas and image continue to resonate in Türkiye today.

Before the conference, a video interview recorded in Brussels was screened featuring Doğan Özgüden and İnci Tuğsavul Özgüden, founders of Ant Publishing, who were among the first to use Korda’s photograph in early Turkish publications during the 1960s.
